The Heart of Oklahoma Expo Center Honors Vice Chairman with Friends of the Expo Award

The Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center recently honored Vice Chairman Karl Kozel for his 38 years of service on the Shawnee Civic & Cultural Development Authority board of trustees, the entity that serves as the governing body of the Expo Center. Kozel’s award was accepted by his son, Tony Kozel, during the Pottawatomie County Junior Livestock Show.

Ring in the New Year with Family-Friendly Events at the Shawnee Expo Center

The Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center is set to start the new year with plenty of exciting events including a dog show and the annual Triangle Winter Horse sale.

The Red Dirt Agility Club will host their first canine agility trial of the year in the Fred Humphrey Pavilion at the Expo Center Jan. 12-14. The event is sanctioned by the American Kennel Club (AKC) and is set to feature AKC-recognized breeds, all-American dogs and mixed breed dogs listed in the AKC Canine Partners Program.

Bike for Kids Warms Hearts at Shawnee Expo in Spirit of the Season

On Saturday, Dec. 16, Faith Christian Outreach gave away nearly 500 bicycles to boys and girls during their 12th Annual Holiday Bike Giveaway. The event was hosted at the Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center at 10 a.m.

Parents, grandparents and children of all ages gathered into the Otto Krause Exhibition Hall welcomed by scores of volunteers providing more than 6,000 cookies and assorted treats for the anticipating families. Bikes for Kids attendees enjoyed games, snacks, coloring and craft stations, free haircuts and more.

Community Favorites Return to Shawnee Expo Center in December

The Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center is set to finish out the year with an array of exciting events for all ages including agriculture shows, competitive rodeo, a firearm tradeshow and more.

The Oklahoma State Poultry Federation will return to the Expo Center for the 101st annual Oklahoma State Poultry Show on Saturday, Dec. 9. Featuring three divisions and more than 3,000 birds, this exhibition will showcase the best of the best in Oklahoma poultry. Judging for the show will begin at 9 a.m. and will continue until all entries have been scored. December Debuts with Shopping Showcases and Team Roping at Shawnee Expo

During the first weekend of December, visitors to the Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center can expect to enjoy an abundance of holiday shopping at the 9th annual Sassafras shopping showcase and Circle W Marketplace craft show, as well as exciting team roping competitions hosted by Jones Arena Productions.

The highly anticipated Sassafras will return to the Otto Krause Arena at the Expo Center Dec. 1 from 5-9 p.m. and Dec. 2 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sassafras is set to feature a plethora of local retailers and artists showcasing one-of-a-kind jewelry, clothing, vintage items, home décor, children’s items and more. Attendees will enjoy a selection of food trucks including The Gyro Guy and The Red Bird both Friday and Saturday as well as Chubby’s Grill on Friday night and Wicked Hungry all-day Saturday. It’s Going to be a November to Remember at the Shawnee Expo Center

This November, visitors to the Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center can expect to experience a variety of fun, family-friendly events including two competitive animal shows, barrel racing, the Excel Auction and more.

The Expo Center welcomes the 2nd annual Black Label Blue Force Oklahoma Invitational Saturday, Nov. 4. This American Bully Kennel Club show will feature exhibitions in several breeds including American bully, English bulldog, old English, short bulldog, American pit bull terrier and French bulldog. Annual Triangle Fall Horse Sale to be held at Shawnee Expo Center

The Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center is proud to be the host venue for the 38th annual Triangle Fall Horse Sale Oct. 27-29. The fall sale is held each year during the final weekend of the United States Team Roping Championships in Oklahoma City.

“The annual Triangle Fall Sale draws horses and buyers from all over the United States and even other countries,” said Chris Dunlap, assistant director of the Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center. “If you’re in the market for a quality horse, this is the best place to find one.”

Fall Favorites Return to the Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center in October 

This October, visitors to the Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center can expect to experience a variety of exciting family-friendly events including an Oklahoma Foundation Quarter Horse Registry exhibition, a dog show, the Triangle Fall Sale and more.

The Expo Center will welcome the Oklahoma Foundation Quarter Horse Registry for their winter show Oct. 14-15. Classes on Saturday, Oct. 14 will feature herd work and speed events including barrel racing, pole bending, keyhole, stake race, breakaway roping, ranch cutting and more. Classes on Sunday, Oct. 15 will feature reining, handy ranch and others. The event will be judged by Rebecca Frerking and Deb Adams. Classes will begin at 8 a.m. both days. Small Town. Big Hearts. 

As Oklahomans, many of us are familiar with the devastation of natural disasters as we have seen Mother Nature’s destruction first-hand across our great state. Over the past month, we have witnessed our neighbors to the south suffer great losses in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey and Irma, and many in our community have stepped up to offer a helping hand.

One such story comes from Dr. Micheal Steward, lead veterinarian at Shawnee Animal Hospital. Dr. Steward and the staff at Shawnee Animal Hospital received more than $100,000 worth of donations to benefit individuals impacted by Hurricane Harvey. In fact, Dr. Steward and his wife, Alice Gay Steward, personally donated more than $2,000 to the drive – and now they’re donating a Ford F350 dually extended-cab pickup truck, a 32-foot Jayco travel trailer and Onan generator to Galilee Baptist Church here in Shawnee, to be gifted to a Texas family that lost everything.

Pottawatomie County Teachers Celebrated at Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center

The Avedis Foundation celebrated Pottawatomie County educators with a special professional development event at the Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center on Aug. 7. The free event, Celebrate Pottawatomie County Teachers, saw hundreds of local teachers, administrators and staff convened for an exciting morning of inspirational speakers.

Attendees enjoyed refreshments, music provided by DJ Austin Smith, door prizes, a book signing and moving presentations. Event speakers included Joy Hofmeister, Oklahoma’s State superintendent of public instruction, and Howard Robinson, principal of Carter Park Elementary School in Fort Worth, Texas. The Celebrate Pottawatomie County Teacher’s keynote was presented by best-selling author and motivational speaker Ron Clark.

Summer Brings Rodeos to the Roster at Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center

The Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center is home to an abundance of entertaining events throughout the year, from horse shows and fundraising events to world-class rodeos and more. This summer, Expo Center visitors can expect to experience plenty of family-friendly rodeo action.

The National Barrel Horse Association OK05 Chapter will return to the Expo Center June 10 for an evening of exciting barrel racing. Exhibitions will begin at 5 p.m., with classes following at 7 p.m. Rodeo fans are invited to spectate for no charge. Entries to compete will be accepted on-site. The Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center Offers Exciting Events this May

The Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center hosts an array of entertaining events throughout the year, from fundraisers and rodeos to large auctions and RV rallies. This May, Expo Center visitors can expect to experience barrel races, a rotary fundraiser, an estate auction, horse trainer challenge and more.

Join us at the Expo Center May 13-14 for the Veterinarians for Veterans Benefit Barrel Race. The event is hosted by Leave ‘Em Standing Productions and co-sanctioned by the Oklahoma 05 district of the National Barrel Horse Association. Proceeds from the race will be awarded to two non-profit organizations that support Oklahoma veterans.

The Pottawatomie County Junior Livestock Show Returns to the Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center

The annual Pottawatomie County Junior Livestock Show returns to the Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center on Tuesday, Feb. 28 and runs through Friday, March 3. The show features Pottawatomie County 4-H and FFA members ages 9-18 and their nominated animals.

The show will commence at noon on Tuesday, Feb. 28 with the Sheep Show, followed by the Doe Goat Show and the Wether Goat Show. Wednesday, March 1 will see the Beef Show at 11 a.m. and Thursday, March 2 will feature the Swine Show at 9 a.m. Awards and scholarships will be presented at the Pottawatomie County Junior Livestock Show Appreciation Reception on Friday, March 3 at 5:30 p.m.

The Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center Announces Additions to Board of Trustees

The Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center recently appointed new members to the Shawnee Civic and Cultural Development Authority board of trustees, the entity that serves as governing body of the Expo Center.

Carl Packwood and Lance Wortham join Tim Barrick, Rachel Melot, Secretary Justin Erickson, Vice Chairman Karl Kozel and Chairman Randy Gilbert on the 2017 board of trustees. Both Packwood and Wortham have previously served on the board.

Shawnee Expo Shows Extra Heart During Faithco Bike Giveaway

On Saturday, Dec. 17, Faithco Church gave away more than 465 bicycles to boys and girls during their 11th Annual Holiday Bike Giveaway. The event was hosted at the Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center at 10 a.m. Parents, grandparents and children of all ages flooded into the Otto Krause Exhibition Hall to scores of volunteers providing more than 5,000 cookies and assorted treats for the anticipating families. 

"After today, we will have given away more than 5,000 bikes to deserving children," said Butch Cantrell, Faithco organizer. "We are so proud of our church members, businesses and individuals in the Shawnee area who support us by donating money, volunteer to assemble bikes or come out to organize this event."

Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center Names Interim Director

The Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center welcomed retired Shawnee Fire Department Chief Jimmy Gibson as interim director of operations on Dec. 16.

Gibson was appointed to the position by City Manager Justin Erickson. As interim director of the Expo Center, Gibson’s responsibilities include coordinating and executing daily operations, overseeing staff and managing client relations.

“I’m honored to have been asked to take on this role at a pivotal time for the Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center,” Gibson said.

Pottawatomie County Junior Livestock Show
Recognizes 2014 Honorees
Two News-Star staffers, each with 40 or more years of history in working with the Pottawatomie County Junior Livestock Show, were honored at the 25th annual Pig Roast and Trophy Auction Monday night.

Executive Editor Mike McCormick and News-Star Photographer Ed Blochowiak were recognized as the 2014 honorees of the PCJLS.

Randy Gilbert, PCJLS chairman, said together, Blochowiak and McCormick have nearly 85 years of dedication and service to the show and its youth.

Central District Livestock Show
Day One of Show Proves Successful
Julie Stout, 9, from Agra in Lincoln County, gave her judge, Glen Blount from Denison, Texas, a high-five after winning $23 while showing her Market Lamb, Freckles, at the Central District Livestock Show Thursday.

Stout said this is her first year to show but she plans to continue showing like her sister does. Her grandfather, known to her as ‘Papa’ watched as she tried her best to remember what to do in the show ring.

“I didn’t need any help,” she said with a smirk on her face but admitted her Papa helped her prepare for the show.

More Than 500 Expected for Livestock Show
More than 500 4-H and FFA students are expected to participate in this week's Central District Livestock Show which begins a three day run Thursday at the Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center in Shawnee.

The Central District encompasses Payne, Lincoln, Pottawatomie, Oklahoma, Cleveland, McLain, Garvin, Murray, Stephens, Jefferson, Carter and Love counties.

In addition to members in the Central District, the Prospect and Market Steer shows are open to 4-H and FFA members in the Noble, Logan, Canadian, Grady, Comanche, Cotton, Marshall, Johnston, Pontotoc, Seminole, Okfuskee, Creek and Pawnee counties.

'Turn for the Twisters' Begins Today
Cross Cut Cowboy Church of Ada will host "Turn for the Twisters" starting today at 2 p.m. and running through Sunday evening. The two-day barrel race at the Shawnee Expo Center will benefit victims of the May 19 tornado.

"We've already got 457 entries on barrel horses already," said Lisa Lawson, volunteer and member of Cross Cut Cowboy Church. "We're expected to raise about $14,000 or $15,000."

There will also be a silent auction from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. today. All proceeds from the auction, registration fees and entry fees will be given directly to tornado victims, Lawson said.

Glory Daze Celebration Set for June 29
Shawnee's Independence Day celebration will be held during the Glory Daze Spectacular event on Saturday from 3-10 p.m. at the Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center, located at 1700 W. Independence.

Glory Daze is a free, family event that will include entertainment from the Geoff Scott Band, Hillbilly Willy, Pulse Quartet and soloist Don Clark. Mike Askins from KGFF will introduce all stage acts.

A variety of games will be available throughout the event such as inflatable games, face painting and magic shows. The Thunderbird Club will present at the event and will fly mock airplanes as well as have a static display to enjoy. Vintage planes will fly overhead throughout the day as well.

Jam Fest 2013 to be Held at Heart of Oklahoma Expo Center
Artists are gearing up to put on a show for the 2013 Jam Fest scheduled Nov. 2 in Shawnee, with proceeds benefiting the Shawnee Police Foundation.

Doors open at 7 p.m. for the Jam Fest at the Heart of Oklahoma Expo Center in Shawnee, 1700 W. Independence.

The evening kicks off at 7:30 p.m. with Patrick Winsett and Foolish Pride taking the stage. At 8:30 p.m., Red Land, a Red Dirt and Rock influenced local band, will take the stage.
